What does “degradable” really mean? Biodegradable vs compostable vs oxo

“Degradable” hides a lot of nuance. Pick wrong and you miss the eco goal and risk compliance. Here are the types and how to choose.

Eco-minded sourcing keeps growing, but the word “degradable” hides a lot of nuance. Choose wrong and you both miss the environmental goal and risk crossing a compliance line. Here is how the common types differ.

First, three terms that are easily confused:

· Biodegradable: broken down by microbes into water, CO2 and biomass, with the key being the environment and time it needs;

· Compostable: breaks down under industrial or home composting, usually certified (such as EU EN 13432 or US BPI), requiring degradation within a set time and no harmful residue;

· Oxo-degradable: additives make the plastic fragment into small pieces first, low cost, but restricted or banned in some countries, so always check the target market rules.

Common eco resins: PLA (polylactic acid) comes from corn starch, clear but rather stiff; PBAT is soft and tough, often blended with PLA to balance feel; PBS and starch-based resins are also used in blends. Most fully biodegradable bags on the market are a PBAT + PLA + starch composite that balances feel, strength and degradability.

How to choose:

1. Confirm which certification your target market recognizes (EU, North America and China GB standards all differ);

2. Be clear on conditions: industrial composting, home composting or natural environment behave very differently;

3. Do not trust a “degradable” label alone; ask for the test report and certificate number;

4. Weigh the cost: fully degradable material is usually well above ordinary PE, so choose by channel and pricing strategy.
